Introductory course in Psychoanalysis
A series of 20 seminars will be conducted by teachers of the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis.
10 seminars in first semester: April 10—June 12, 2008.
10 seminars in second semester: July 17—September 18, 2008.
Thursdays 7.30pm—9.00pm, venues to be announced closer to the time.
This course will introduce the teachings of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan through the study of Freud’s famous case studies:
- Fragment of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria (1905 [1901]) - the case of Dora.
- Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-Year-Old-Boy (1909) - the case of Little Hans.
- Notes upon a Case of Obsessional Neurosis (1909) - the case of the Rat Man.
- Psychoanalytic Notes on an Autobiographical Account of a Case of Paranoia (Dementia Paranoides) (1911) - the case of Senatspräsident Schreber.
- From the History of an Infantile Neurosis (1918 [1914]) - the case of the Wolf Man.
- The Psychogenesis of a Case of Homosexuality in a Woman (1920).

Master's course in Psychoanalysis
The Course
The School of Psychology,
Victoria University, and the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis offer a four-year,
part-time postgraduate program of clinical studies and research in psychoanalysis
at an advanced level. It is aimed at professionals and students in the field
of mental health and those working in disciplines that incorporate psychoanalytic knowledge and methodology
(Philosophy, Women's Studies, Cultural Studies, History, Literature, Sociology,
Anthropology, Education, Social Work and others). It involves the critical study
of psychoanalytic theory and technique in its clinical applications, as well
as the use of psychoanalysis in the social sciences and the arts.
The clinical components of the program focus on practical technical issues, diagnostic questions
and the direction of the treatment. The teaching staff are a team of psychoanalysts
and scholars of psychoanalysis with many years of experience in the postgraduate
courses offered by the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis.
Course Location
In Melbourne, the
Master of Psychoanalysis course is based at the Footscray Park Campus of Victoria
University.
In Sydney, the course is offered at the premises of the College of Psychiatrists
in Rozelle.
Course intake and fees
This is a fee-paying course. The
Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme (PELS) is available. A limited number of
vacancies will be offered to students able to take only individual subjects,
as well as those wishing to audit subjects. Sydney students only: an annual
levy will be payable to cover additional expenses.
Course accreditation
The course is recognized by the
Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis as part of the training requirements (the
theoretical studies component) in its program of training in psychoanalysis
(personal analysis and clinical supervision are the other two components of
training). The course offers to professionals and trainees in the mental health
field a sound conceptual basis for clinical psychoanalytic practice. Psychoanalysts
registered with the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis as Registered Practising
Analysts are eligible to register with the National Register of PACFA (Psychotherapy
and Counselling Federation of Australia). This course is not intended to meet
APS requirements for a professional psychology qualification.
Course entry requirements
A degree in a relevant discipline
from an approved tertiary institution or equivalent is required. Selection will
be based on professional and/or academic experience, referees reports and personal
interviews.
